Lake Como & Water Sports
In and on the lake…
For water lovers, the lake really offers everything one could wish for! Swimmers will find the right temperature, enthusiastic fishers will find an overwhelming fish stock and children will enjoy the slowly sloping depth on the sandy shore (a big exception for Italian lakes!). The circumstances are also ideal for (speedboat) boating, water skiing, stand up paddling (sup), sailing and (kite) surfing.
(Kite) surfing
Lake Como is famous for two specific wind currents:
1. BREVA
This wind usually blows and rises between noon and 1 pm and is excellent for surfing. The Breva indicates nice and stable summer weather and usually dies around 6 pm. Seen from the park, the flags on the forecourt then blow to the left (southern wind).
2. TIRANO
This wind sometimes blows in the morning or late at night and is very irregular and temperamental. It can be very weak or very strong. Sometimes this can even be dangerous for water sports enthusiasts. Of course for the more experienced surfers this is an exciting opportunity to practice their tricks. Seen from the park, the flags then blow to the right (northern wind).
Right next to the park towards the harbor is a professional surf school (Tabo) where you can rent surfboards, canoes and sailing boats, with or without lessons.
If you want lessons, you can choose from:
- course for beginners
- advanced course
- course funboard for beginners / advanced
- extra advanced course
- beauty course (“esteso”) focused on style and execution
- kite surfing
See tabosurf.com
Reparation of surfboards, skis, tennis rackets and snowboards can be done by one of the “Chicca Sport” locations in Domaso, Colico or Dongo.
Fishing
Fishing at the shores of the lake or on a boat on the lake requires the possession of a fishing license. This license can be bought at the town hall in Gera Lario or at the local fishing shop (approx. € 8,00). Take passport photos!
Live bait is for sale in Colico, near the lakeside, diagonally opposite the village fountain; besides bait, also fishing equipment are offered in this shop. Also in Gera Lario, near the bend to the village, is a fishing shop, where you can buy fishing rods, floats, hooks, etc.
If you are unable to catch something to eat yourself, you can still go to “Pesca Sportiva” in Delebio. At this trout farm you can pick up delicious trout and take it with you ready cleaned. In the meantime, children can play in the playground. To get there, take the road through Sorico. Follow the road over the bridge, continue until the roundabout and then turn right. Then follow the signs for Sondrio, in the village of Delebio you will see the signs “Pesca Sportiva”.
Water skiing
If you want to go water skiing with your own boat, you must meet the following requirements:
- A boat license is required for motorboats that can reach a speed of more than 20 km per hour;
- You must have the original boat license, a life jacket or buoy for each present, flares and a fire extinguisher on board;
- Liability insurance must be made and these papers must be on board;
- Water sports tax receipt must be on board;
- The captain of the boat must be a good swimmer;
- The boat must have a convex rear-view mirror and “dead man’s switch”;
- The line between the boat and the water skier must be at least 12 meters;
- A towing bet must be provided with a release system.
When skiing, the boat must stay at least 300 meters away from the coast. You can sail away from the coast at a maximum of 10 km per hour.
The registration number of the boat must be visible on both sides of the boat. The registration papers must be available on the boat, for inspection purposes.
You pay water sports tax at the post office. That is also possible in Gera Lario! (“Tasse per la barca”).
Until now, strict controls have not yet been carried out on Lake Como, in contrast to Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore. However, if you are caught violating one of the above requirements, there is the possibility of getting a fine and also seizure of your boat!
